REAch2 was established in 2012 and is now one of the foremost primary-only academy trusts in the country, running schools across Greater London, the South East, East Anglia and the Midlands. Our CEO Steve Lancashire was knighted in January 2016 for services to education. In September 2016, the Department for Education (DfE) approved REAch2 to open 22 brand new schools over the next few years, mostly in our existing areas of operation http://www.gov.uk/government/news/more-choice-as-over-80000-new-free-schools-places-created. And in December 2016, REAch2’s governance was singled out for a case study in DfE’s guide to academy trusts http://www.gov.uk/government/publications/multi-academy-trusts-establishing-and-developing-your-trust

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and enthusiastic governance professional to advise and support our exceptional Trustees and Regional Boards, ensuring we are working fully effectively to secure the best possible outcomes for children. We are not looking necessarily for governance experience of the education sector; what matters more is an understanding of the principles and practices of good governance and the key role of a Company Secretary within that, plus a proven ability to work closely with both staff colleagues and voluntary non-executives alike.

Our governance information is available at http://reach2.org/governance-policy/governance/ and our cherished organisational values are set out at http://reach2.org/about-us/touchstones-and-cornerstones/

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Appointments are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Main purpose of role:

  1. Supporting the Chair and other Trustees in ensuring the Trust Board and its Committees function efficiently and effectively
  2. Ensuring good information flows within the Board and its Committees, with our Regional Boards and their Committees, and with the Trust’s Senior Leadership Team
  3. Facilitating induction of any new Trustees and Regional Non-Executives, and assisting with their professional development as required
  4. Facilitating the Board’s periodic communications with our Members, in particular via at least one meeting of Members per year
  5. Maintaining records of Members’ and Trustees’ information as required, including with Companies House, on our website and on the DfE’s national Edubase
  6. Arranging Trust Board and Committee meetings, including: agreeing meeting dates; liaising with Chairs and senior leaders on agenda and papers; ensuring meetings are quorate and any votes are properly carried out; drafting and finalising minutes and progressing any actions
  7. Managing clerks appointed to support the Regional Boards and Committees and liaising with relevant Trust staff to ensure those meetings run effectively, with high quality, timely read-outs for Trustees
  8. Liaising with relevant Trustees, the CEO and the Director of Finance to ensure annual accounts and other key finance and audit returns are submitted in accordance with regulatory requirements
  9. Continuously improving how the Board functions, including through better use of ICT, enhanced understanding of governance and integration of effective practice from other organisations and sectors
  10. Responding to governance related questions from Trustees and staff, as well as proactively advising on legislative, regulatory and sectoral developments relevant to governance, drawing on external advice as appropriate
  11. Managing the work involved in responding to any requests from regulators to review or inspect the Trust’s records and working more routinely with the Trust’s Head of Internal Audit and External Auditors
  12. Keeping and using the company seal where appropriate
  13. Ensuring central Trust policies are kept current, reviewed effectively for in terms of implementation and impact and that Trustees are aware of their implications
  14. Maintaining the Trust’s governance and policy pages on our website and intranet, and providing a first point of contact for queries, in liaison with the governance team.
